Construction Process
How we prepare you for the construction process of developing an accessory dwelling unit (ADU) on your property: Design, Zoning and Construction
The ADU Development Process
The journey from planning to completion of an ADU is best started by hiring a professional architect or contractor to ensure compliance and efficiency. The process starts with the initial planning and design to ensure the required precise drawings and layout descriptions. It continues with engaging a licensed contractor (Construction Supervisor) to determine and compare construction cost estimates.
The process concludes successfully upon securing the necessary permits from Boston’s Inspectional Services Department when all the required documents from the homeowner and the contractor are examined and approved.
Information on Permits and Compliance with Boston's Zoning Laws
The homeowner will need to hire a contractor (Construction Supervisor) to secure the right permits to adhere to local zoning laws, which are crucial for the legal development of ADUs. Boston has specific requirements, such as ensuring units have compliant ceiling heights, common area accessible to water, electricity, general utility shut-offs, and a required minimum of three egress points for safety.
